U.N.K.L.E., named after the television series of the same name, is the brain child of Trip-Hop pioneers DJ Shadow and James Lavelle. Having remixed some of the finest songs in the last decade, Lavelle has made his mark on singles such as Radiohead's “Planet Telex”, the Verve's “Bittersweet Symphony”, Beck's “Where It's At” and Massive Attack's “Karmacoma”. DJ Shadow, famous in his own right as Mo’Wax Records biggest selling artist, has been hailed as the Jimi Hendrix of samples. After working together on Shadow’s landmark debut album “Entroducing”, the two solidified the concept of U.N.K.L.E. to explode categorization in music, as much as to take a nostalgic trip through the sounds of their childhood. Combining the hooks of Britrock with the layered beauty of Electronic music, Shadow and Lavelle weave a haunting masterpiece filled with cinematic twists and turns, taking us on a journey through dark futuristic worlds. U.N.K.L.E. also brings together an astounding array of collaborators including Thom Yorke of Radiohead, Richard Ashcroft of The Verve, Mike D of the Beastie Boys, the hardcore rap of Kool G Rap and even Jason Newstead of Metallica. After a long and sometimes drawn out recording process, U.N.K.L.E. released “Psyence Fiction” in 1998, one of the most eagerly anticipated albums in recent memory.
