Loaded with an abundance of worthy extras giving proper enabling to reach into your pocket for the price of admission, the Beastie Boys revisit another early benchmark with 1992’s alternative hip-hop classic, Check Your Head.
A departure from their initial success of hip hop laced with hard rock elements, the Beasties decided to tackle jazz and blues that, at times, comes off as quite hybrid when incorporated with their base sound, which may explain its level of success amongst fans of various genres on top of the band’s core audience. Garnering much critical acclaim and spawning staples such as “So What’Cha Want” and “Pass The Mic” among others, the album’s existence in top whatever lists, fans’ minds, and bar room jukeboxes is assured until the end of time.
On disc two we get the rare privilege of being given a consistent helping of scraps from this era with several versions of “So What’Cha Want,” one with Cypress Hill making an appearance, as well as alternate takes on “Finger Lickin’ Good” and “Pass The Mic.” Not to be discounted are fun live renditions of songs such as “Gratitude” in Japan with a guest and “Stand Together” from that land down under.
Save this one for a gathering of friends, turn it up, then step away from the stereo and see the fever spread across the room as you refill your glass.
