La Rocca is not to be confused with those indie Christian rock scenesters of the same name. The latter is a husband and wife duo that sings worshipful tunes to believers and heathens (non-believers) alike. Our La Rocca is an L.A based band that named themselves after a bar.

The Truth is La Rocca’s briefly awaited follow-up to this years EP Sing Song Sung. While a more fleshed out reflection of the band’s interests, La Rocca’s full-length lacks the refreshing, exciting energy of Sing Song Sung. Though their perfect pop song “Sing Song Sung” is included, it does not include “Singapore” or even “Home”. Instead, from the EP we get the situation comedy “Sketches (Twenty Something Life)”.

There are a few awkward and/or cheesy touches marring many of these well-composed songs. Whose idea was it (Tony Hoffer) to get all synthy in “If You Need The Morning”? It’s true that this song was featured on last seasons O.C. while Cohen sang into his hairbrush, I believe was the scene. It’s so strangely out of place in this predominately straightforward (almost) classic rock album. Almost like they planned it all out to get O.C fans - a bunch of teenagers (people in their thirties) to buy The Truth. You’re a sneaky one Bjorn Baillie. For the most part though The Truth meanders back and forth between early eighties U2-ish wartime anthems (“Eyes While Open” “Cats”) and an array of piano-laden songs that feel like hanging with a bunch of barfly’s talking about - to quote their hero The Boss - their “Glory Days” (“Time slips away and leaves you with nothing mister, but boring stories of glory days”). Not that that’s entirely a bad thing, “Non Believer” is charming in its disillusioned way - as is “Capitol Pill”. Title track “The Truth” is quintessential La Rocca in all their beer drenched depressive Irish honky-rock glory.

For those weary of any kind of scarf-wearing singer/songwriter type misery (“Some You Give Away”) it might only be recommended to partake La Rocca’s more propelling Sing Song Sung if it weren’t for a couple of exceptions. Namely “This Life” which captures some of the fun-loving party too hearty songwriting style prevalent in Sing Song Sung and the highlight of the album “Goodnight” which found that magical place above and beyond it all.
