The first thing noticed with the single “Eye For an Eye,” is the absence of beat master DJ Shadow. But his equal counterpart James Lavelle sails on just fine without, on this intense and dark new track “Eye For an Eye,” off the forthcoming album “Never, Never, Land.”
“Eye For an Eye,” begins with a sample “Even now in heaven there were angels carrying savage weapons” a dark distant guitar strummed in a middle eastern flavor builds against erratic paced high hats, and bang!, the deepest driving bass and phat shadow-less beats kick in with force, in the distance voices howl “Run, Run, Run, but you just can’t hide,” “An Eye for an Eye a Tooth for a Tooth,” is repeated as pulsating keys and a heavy felt string ensemble take charge to this dramatic tune. Samples of “Ball of Confusion (That’s What the World is Today,)” by Undisputed Truth, and “Fairground Ghost” by James Asher.
Also included on the single is a remix by Force Mass Motion Versus Dylan Rhymes, sends the track to the dance floor, with pulsating keys and speed ball beats. Another hypnotic remix is contained by Mode, with the delay turned up high.
