7 Various Artists The Believer’s Music Issue 2005 CD The Believer | 2005 | Album Biography Comments (0) Read Full Page Digg Review Add del.icio.us   The Believer is an off-shoot of McSweeny’s, the literary magazine renown for its often bizarre form and its leadership by one-time wunderkind Dave Eggers (the quality of his work didn’t drop, he’s just too old to be a wunderkind anymore). The Believer runs random essays, long interviews, and short book reviews; and once a year, they put out a music issue. This is year two. For the 2005 music issue CD, the Believer crew chose songs by contemporary, and relatively little-known bands that are in turn, covered by other contemporary, little-known bands. The opening song is “Bridges & Balloons” originally by Joanna Newsom, and covered here by The Decemberists. Their version renders the song with a quick, acoustic guitar, and lead singer Colin Meloy singing in his odd muppet-voice. “Anna’s Sweater” was originally by a San Francisco group who called themselves Blear. Blear is no more, but “Anna’s Sweater” lives on in this cover by Two Gallants, who perform a finger-picked acoustic version with warbling vocals. The Shins’ version of the Postal Services’ “We Will Become Silhouettes” makes a poppy, happy song out of an otherwise dark little tune. That’s what The Shins are good at—singing happily about misery. This is a great CD for anyone who likes to explore new music that you would probably never hear if not for weird, independent magazines and their obscure music issues. It’s unlikely that anyone will have heard of everyone involved in the album—all the groups and people performing as well as all the groups and people being covered—but the point, of course, is to open up some new doors.
