7 Various Artists Choke: Music From the Motion Picture ATO Records | 2008 | Album Biography Comments (0) Read Full Page Digg Review Add del.icio.us   Choke is Chuck Palahniuk’s twisted tale of addiction and deprivation. Palahniuk, who is also the novelist of Fight Club, is famous for pushing his readers to their limits, and Choke is no exception. It is the story of Victor Mancinni, a sex addict who forces himself to choke at fancy restaurants in order to gain love from the people who save his life. The story is fast-paced, upbeat, and often times a little creepy. The soundtrack to the movie version of the book is no exception. The secret to a great soundtrack lies in how well it is connected with its story. The soundtrack to the epic Forrest Gump spans four decades of rock and roll, with each song carefully chosen for each scene (I cite Jenny walking out of her lover’s apartment right as Jim Morrison sings, “Don’t you love her as she’s walking out the door,”). Choke masters this connection with songs like Alap Momin’s faux-house track “Sin Terror” and the Buzzcocks’ garage punk “Orgasm Addict.” The songs tie perfectly into the movie, and that is important when it comes to a good soundtrack. The soundtrack is mostly composed of scenester alternative tracks. Kicking off with Ben Kweller’s “The Rules” and followed by Natural History’s cover of Spoon’s “Don’t You Evah,” you will know from the moment you start listening to the CD what you are in for. The style rarely fluctuates throughout the soundtrack. “Navy Nurse” by the Fiery Furnaces is a six-minute-long, bass-driven song. Radiohead’s new hit, “Reckoner,” follows. Momin’s “Sin Terror” is followed by the soundtrack’s best song, “Satan Said Dance,” by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (the song was also featured in the movie’s theatrical trailer). “Orgasm Addict,” Death Cab for Cutie’s “No Sunlight,” and “Wicked” by Blitzen Trapper come next. Ms. Tyree “Sugar” Jones’s “If You Feel Like It” is the CD’s only non-alternative song, a soulful song that sounds like it came out of '70s Motown. The soundtrack ends with “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream Pt. 1” by My Morning Jacket, “Bicycle” by the Shout Out Louds, “There’s Been An Accident” by the Twilight Singers, and a cover of the Doors’ “Crystal Ship” by Nicole Atkins. There is little variation on the soundtrack. All of the songs are, for the most part, of the same modern alternative rock. Driving synthesizer tracks and pounding drums are found on nearly every track. The songs by themselves are not awe-inspiring; however, put together as the background to the movie itself, Choke is certainly worth a listen.
