6 Various Artists Perfect as Cats: A Tribute to the Cure Manimal Vinyl | 2008 | Album Biography Comments (0) Read Full Page Digg Review Add del.icio.us   From the moment Xu Xu Fang’s take on “Fascination Street” started coming out of my laptop speakers, I knew that I wasn’t in for any normal tribute album. I was expecting, probably foolishly, note-for-note renditions of songs by the Cure played by the indiest of indie rock bands. More accurately, this is probably what I was hoping for, as I am a huge Cure fan. Instead, what I heard were more rewritings than tributes. The artistic license taken on this tribute album is inarguable and sometimes inexcusable. I can appreciate the creativity expressed on this album, but I often got the feeling that some of the bands were changing the songs for the sake of changing them. For example, on Blackblack’s rendition of “Inbetween Days,” the song randomly slows to half time with no warning. Tara Busch plays “Let’s Go to Bed,” transforming it into an ambient electronica tune—the classic keyboard riff is only played once throughout the entire song. Indian Jewelry’s “The Walk” is mostly unintelligible keyboard effects with strange voices layering the background. Many other songs on the album follow suit; the artists try to make the songs their own (which is a good thing) and end up making unenjoyable songs (which is not). Having said that, there are a few renditions on the album that work quite well. Kaki King plays a drumless version of “Close to Me,” and you can tell that she worked hard at putting her own unique spin on the classic, and it works perfectly. Geneva Jacuzzi also play “The Walk,” offering a much more recognizable version of the song, and yet still put their own spin on it. My personal favorite track on the album, Mariee Sioux’s acoustic version of “Lovesong” sounds nothing like the original, and yet is still listenable. Some songs hit, and they hit big. Others aren’t even on the target. Some were able to find the medium between artistic license and the originals while others were so far off from the original that to call them tribute songs is blasphemy. This isn’t to say that these songs that go off on their own aren’t good. They are very good for what they are; however, unless you are reading the track listing, it is impossible to tell which Cure song they are a tribute to. I don’t recommend this album to die-hard Cure fans—you will be disappointed. I recommend this album more for fans of any of the bands playing on the album.
